Day 1

Arrival

Arrival to Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to the UAACC. Your arrival will be met by fire torches, traditional dancers and drummers!  

 

Day 2

Orientation

Brief introduction to the history of the UAACC and orientation session . Walk around the UAACC campus with visits to classrooms to meet Day Students at the UAACC and opportunities to share knowledge in English, Arts, Music, Computer classes, etc.
 Early evening interaction with the UAACC’s LEADERS OF TOMORROW CHILDREN.
*Opportunity for viewing of one of several documentaries that have been made about Pete and Charlotte O’Neal including the classic
 *A PANTHER IN AFRICA by Aaron Matthews
 *MAMA C: URBAN WARRIOR IN THE AFRICAN BUSH by Dr. Joan Hershfield
 * LEGACY:  SPIRIT OF THE BLACK PANTHERS by Jermaine Taishi Thomas
followed by exciting Q&A session

 

Day 3

Arusha Town Trip

Visit to Cultural Heritage Center in Arusha for a chance to study and research artworks connected to Tanzania’s 120+ cultural groups, and from other parts of Africa, all in one compound. Lunch at Cultural Heritage Center and visit to Shanga Shanga, a community cooperative that provides opportunities for disabled people to become artists.   Evening Youth Forum which is chance to sit down with youth activists, artists and leaders in the community to share ideas, discussions and debates. Possibility for an after forum jam by the fire in the poetry pit (weather permitting!).  Overnight at the UAACC.

Teaching Day and Batik workshops

 
 
 
 
 
 

Ngoma is Kiswahili for both 'drum' and 'dance/celebration'.
Dance workshops led by a group of professional performers in the Arusha and Tanga Regions.  

 

After breakfast opportunities to interact and bond with the UAACC Day Students with communal activities and choices that include yoga sessions, mural paintings, recording studio sessions, basketball or football games, learning to wear traditional clothing, kanga wrapping and head ties, and more!

Evening preparation for Maasai and Serengeti Safari.
Lunch,  Dinner and Overnight at the UAACC.

 

A visit to Maasai Land, home to the Maasai people, a proud and independent ethnic community who remain nomadic herders and warriors.  Visiting traditional, temporary villages called “enkangs” provides a glimpse into their fascinating culture.  The visit includes opportunities to be with both the elders and youth in the village and participate in various daily tasks including herding cattle and goats, milking and gathering firewood and even repairing houses with the cow dung and mud that is used to plaster the homes!  There are opportunities to make jewelry with the women and learn about significance of colors and patterns associated with the beads worn by men, women and children; learn about traditional Maasai medicines and remedies; participate in a sacred goat sacrifice and even dance with the morani warriors under a starlit sky!  

 

Opportunity for teaching in the UAACC Classrooms followed by Batik Workshop led by the UAACC artists after lunch.

Fireside jam session after dinner and preparation for coastal safari.
